Refreshing our website to help us exchange important ideas aimed at improving society

Since founding Umalia in 2012, our goal has been to catalyze private sector engagement aiming to resolve social, economic and environmental challenges, while bringing private industry together with other sectors to create a positive impact on both business and society. Our primary emphasis has been on working with companies – both large and small – to show them how they could establish corporate societal engagement projects that can help the world deal with the challenges of safeguarding our environment and alleviating poverty, while at the same time strengthening their company brands, staff morale and bottom lines.

So we are pleased to announce that it has been revamped, primarily with an eye to making these major changes:

  • It is now responsive
  • We have assigned a prominent place on the homepage to our biannual newsletter called Stimulus
  • Under the most recent Stimulus newsletter on our homepage, there is also a box with the headline, “Subscribe to Our Newsletter”

We hope you’ll visit our revamped website regularly, and feel free to contact us at info@umalia.ca

Resounding success at the silent auction for Ecole Sainte-Anne-du-Lac on April 10th!

We are very grateful for the energetic engagement and unwavering collaboration of more than 25 volunteers and 8 organizations from all sectors (businesses, NGOs, school), including Umalia, with whom we managed to raise more than $ 13,600 at our silent auction, which brought together more than 150 participants. A short documentary by filmmaker Olivier Côté, made in 2014 when he was only 16, was also screened to show the genesis of this magnificent education triad in Sô-Ava, Benin.

We thank all our colleagues, clients, friends, families, volunteers and partners for deciding to take this adventure boat with us for the benefit of the children of Sô-Ava.

With a lot of gratitude from the bottom of my heart!

Innovating through Shared Value partnerships - five leading companies explore the potential

Umalia and Cohesion Strategies, an expert consulting firm in brand strategy, jointly held the first Shared Value Lab in Montreal. These two companies chose to collaborate and thus demonstrate the essence of this approach focused on creating business and societal value, at the heart of which partnerships are a lever for creating business benefits and positive social impact.

The Shared Value approach, developed by Michael Porter of the University of Harvard and Mark Kramer, stands out from other corporate social responsibility approaches in that it sees societal challenges are a source of innovation for businesses which can enhance the competitiveness and differentiation of the company while simultaneously advancing the economic and societal conditions for sustainable progress.

It is thus using the heart of the business, its strategies, products, services, to create economic and societal impact.

Fifteen executives from five Canadian firms, from different sectors and industries, were present and highly engaged, i.e. Industrial Alliance, Jefo, Saputo, Shire Canada and Ubisoft. They joined a panel of several high quality international experts, coming from the Center for Business Innovation of the Conference Board of Canada, the Shared Value Initiative and formerly from the IBM Smarter Planet initiative.

During the day rich in mutual reflections and discussions, participants had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the approach and above all, to explore the potential for their own business. These discussions lead them to identify innovative strategies and concepts, allowing them to position themselves competitively, to address trade issues and to respond positively to the challenges of society, thus identifying the potential for them to become positive agents of change.

It goes without saying that these companies have only begun to explore what could help them grow their business while also creating a stronger society on all levels.
